Really helps with conversations I think - I get quite annoyed with blogs that don't have it as I have to remember to check back after commenting (as I did with this - now I can tick box below! Get Recent Comments seems to work fine – it's confusing to set up at first, but actually gives you quite a lot of control over how you display your comments. Doesn't show Identicons though! Gah... Have you considered http://txfx.net/wordpress-plugins/subscribe-to-comments/ so that people can get any follow up comments by email?
