Amazon.com have launched a new line of packaging designed to be both frustration free and eco-friendly.
The initiative was first implemented in the US starting with 19 best selling products, eliminating the use of plastic binding and wire ties. A range of products are being shipped in recyclable cardboard containers designed to be easier to open and environmentally friendly.
In March earlier this year Amazon.com added an innovative rating feature on its website, allowing customers to leave feedback on what they thought of the new packaging.
Amazon.com states that “since 2007, Amazon has made significant progress to reduce excess packaging in its shipments to customers and has introduced additional types of recyclable packing materials to protect items while in transit.”
The company have even designed software in order to determine the right size box for a product based on its dimensions and weight. David Son, co-founder and chief operating officer of Kingston said, ““The majority of Kingston memory products that are sold on Amazon.com come in easy-open, recyclable cases that are just slightly larger than the products themselves”. Even the air pillows used to protect items in transit are 100% recyclable.
Amazon have also announced plans to open its new corporate headquarters in Seattle in mid 2010, featuring “ten sustainable, eco-friendly buildings that meet LEED certification requirements.”
The company have also launched Amazon Green, featuring the most eco friendly buys across the site from electronics to books.
The subject of eco-friendly packaging has been described as a “breakthrough consumer issue,” and studies point towards an increasing trend in a consumer preference to sustainable packaging options.
